Characteristic Classes of Foliated Surface Bundles with Area-preserving Holonomy
Making use of the extended flux homomorphism defined in [13] on the group SympΣg of symplectomorphisms of a closed oriented surface Σg of genus g ≥ 2, we introduce new characteristic classes of foliated surface bundles with symplectic, equivalently area-preserving, total holonomy. These characteristic classes are stable with respect to g and we show that they are highly non-trivial. We also pro...
متن کاملChromatic Characteristic Classes in Ordinary Group Cohomology
We study a family of subrings, indexed by the natural numbers, of the mod p cohomology of a finite group G. These subrings are based on a family of vn-periodic complex oriented cohomology theories and are constructed as rings of generalised characteristic classes. We identify the varieties associated to these subrings in terms of colimits over categories of elementary abelian subgroups of G, na...
متن کاملCalibrated Fibrations on Noncompact Manifolds via Group Actions
In this paper we use Lie group actions on noncompact Riemannian manifolds with calibrations to construct calibrated submanifolds. In particular, if we have an (n−1)torus acting on a noncompact Calabi-Yau n-fold with a trivial first cohomology, then we have a special Lagrangian fibration on that n-fold. We produce several families of examples for this construction and give some applications to s...
متن کاملA classification of unipotent spherical conjugacy classes in bad characteristic
Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of bad characteristic. We classify the spherical unipotent conjugacy classes of G. We also show that if the characteristic of k is 2, then the fixed point subgroup of every involutorial automorphism (involution) of G is a spherical subgroup of G.
متن کاملArea preserving group actions on S 2
The main result of this paper is that every action of a finite index subgroup of SL(3, Z) on S2 by area preserving diffeomorphisms factors through a finite group. An important tool we use, which may be of independent interest is the result that if F : S2 → S2 is a non-trivial, area preserving, orientation preserving diffeomorphism and if Fix(F ) contains at least three points, then F has points...
